Truth Versus Politically Correct

"A portion of mankind take pride in their vices and pursue their purpose; many more waver between doing what is right and complying with what is wrong." Horace, Italian Poet, 65-8 BC

Last week on the newspaper editorial page, I read an article by Cal Thomas titled, “No More Green and White.” In this article Mr. Thomas referred to his high school colors, green and white. Please allow me to quote the beginning of this article:

“At [my high school] graduation, boys wore green robes and the girls wore white. No one considered the girls inferior because of the color of their robes. Today we live in different times. My alma mater…is one of several schools to have decided that their commencement ceremony this year will feature single-color robes to respect transgender students and those who do not identify as either male or female. In the age of Caitlyn Jenner, any effort to classify the sexes is becoming increasingly difficult, if not downright impossible.”

So says Cal Thomas. Some may read Mr. Thomas’s article and become angry. When I read the article, I became sad. Saddened because this article pointed out yet another instance where truth has fallen to the guidelines of the politically correct.

Mr. Thomas cites another point from a talk radio program where a father called in to relate what happened to his eighth-grade son. The father said he didn’t know what to do and his son hadn’t known how to respond. The man’s son had heard from a male classmate that the classmate was now identifying as a female. How would you have responded had that eighth grader been your child?

The article mentioned Facebook’s attempt to oblige gender self-identifiers by listing 58 “gender options.” This met with complaints that the 58 options were not enough. Unwilling to confront the politically correct police, Facebook now allows users to decide whatever term they want to use to describe their gender. To this Cal Thomas writes, “Something very strange, if not bordering on insidious, is happening to this country.”

I like Webster’s Online Dictionary’s definition of insidious: causing harm in a way that is gradual or not easily noticed. And then I agree with this statement in the article, “This is what happens when standards are abandoned and truth becomes subjective.” I applaud President Eisenhower’s action in the 1950s when he included the phrase “under God” in the pledge of allegiance to the American flag.

But now, decades later, we see numerous attempts to remove God from the lives of our children. My prayer is, God, help us.
